As I posted in the past, I was noticing that the Left Hand Exhaust Valve was starting to open after the designated 3 o’clock mark(about 3-4 inches higher than the mark). Well, I took everything off, and inspected the cam bearing and shaft and everything seems to be O.K. I found the marks on the Cam Gear and the Crank Gear and both dots are matched up. Is it O.K to mis-align the dots to get the Left hand valve to open at the proper time? Or, is there something else I should be looking at? Thanks.

Jim, the L/H exhaust valve MUST be set to the correct lash before the flywheel mark will work. If there is any wear on the rocker arm or valve stem top that makes valve lash adjustment impossible to set correctly you will get an error using the L/H ex open mark. [I usually use a dial indicator on the rocker arm right above the valve to set the lash for cam timing purposes].
~If that is ok then you should probably suspect cam wear or bending pushrod or gear wear. ~When checking the valve timing you should hold the push rod & spin it, what you are looking for is actually "0" lash or the pushrod just getting tight, not the valve actually opening. If you are waiting for the valve to open before looking at the flywheel, the mark will usually be too high. [just starting to open is really "0" lash].
~If it is still off & you don’t want to re grind the cam or replace gears then you can move the cam gear to be one tooth off if that will make it timed correctly.
