2cyl gasoline engine distributors run at engine speed and there is a spark on the exhaust stroke. Why is an exhaust stroke spark not acceptable for an LP engine? I just came across this reading about the JD 720s in the latest issue of GM. It would seem like eliminating the exhaust stroke spark would be desirable for both engines, not just the LP.

Gary, with the distributor running at 1/2 engine speed there is a little more precise timing control & the LP ran higher compression so spark scatter would effect it more. I'm sure there was also some concern that a backfire would damage the LP converter. Also if the engine & exhaust filled with LP due to a leaking converter there could have been a muffler explosion [or worse] during cranking.
~Unless the gasoline engine has a backfire in the exhaust or fire coming out the muffler, a spark on the exhaust stroke won't hurt it. Now if there is a cam in the engine or there is a lot of valve overlap so there is both unburned gasoline & oxygen in the exhaust system then a spark on the exhaust stroke would cause problems. Some tractor pullers use the LP distributor drive in their gasoline pullers. Most new automobiles with computer control use a lost spark [fire on the exhaust stroke] ignition system now, the only difference is with electronic fuel injection the fuel is injected more precisely & it burns more completely so there is very little burnable mixture going out the exhaust.

Thanks Clooney. I encountered the difference in timing of a gasoline vs. LP engine also when I was tuning up my 60 gasoline. Went to the auto parts store for a new dist cap and he only showed the LP cap in his book. The only source I could ever locate for the gasoline cap was the Deere dealer. About $35 vs. $7 for the LP cap. You would think the auto parts places would sell the gasoline cap since there are a lot more gas engines around and one should be as easy to make as the other.

Gary, The local NAPA man once told me that a 4 cylinder cap was being used on some 2 cylinder JD and just a plug in the other 2 holes. Clooney might know about this and if it worked OK. It would cost a lot less, just wouldn't look right.
