Can you put a flathead on a 47 JD-A and a 42 JD-B? And if you can, what are the part numbers that I need to look for. And what can I expect to pay for them? Thanks.

2-cyl.,
If you can find a heisler or other aftermarket head, you may be able to put a higher comp. head on your '47 A. The "Flat Heads" or "0cc combustion chamber heads" for A's stopped in either '39 or '40. They have a different head bolt pattern than your '47 A block. However, If you can find a pre-'40 A block, It will bolt up to your '47 case, just be sure to bore it, because the top of the bore is larger in diameter than the bottom, and the .250 longer stoke in your '47 (the old A's were 6.5")will put the rings up in this area! Or just buy a #1 power block!!!

Doug B,
I know what you mean by your post, I don't know why the old 0cc heads adopted the name "Flat Heads", I was a bit curious the first time I saw them mentioned myself.

Flat head??? The A&B both use a (valve in head) head..... Unless you are talking something completly new, somone has fed you some BS.... Better do some more reading up on the JD's.
The only John Deere to use a flat head was the GP.

DOUG B.

I WAS LOOKING FOR INFORMATION! NOT A SMART ALECK REMARK! YOU BETTER DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON JOHN DEERE'S BEFORE YOU TRY TO SHOW SOMEONE UP! THE JOHN DEERE G, ALONG WITH THE JD-A, AND POSSIBLY THE JD-B HAD THEM ALSO. SO DON'T PLAY THIS KNOW IT ALL GAME UNLESS YOU KNOW. SORRY IF I COME ACROSS A LITTLE STRONG, BUT AFTER I HAVE REBUILT SEVERAL 2 CYLINDER JOHN DEERE'S FOR PULLING, AND MY DAD AND GRANDPA WERE JOHD DEERE MECHICANIC'S ON THE 2 CYLINDER TRACTORS I DON'T NEED SOMEONE TRYING TO INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE WHEN THEY DON'T KNOW EITHER. I DON'T CLAIM TO KNOW IT ALL EITHER THAT IS WHY I ASKED THE QUESTION FOR A LEGITIMATE ANSWER. SORRY IF THIS OFFENDS!

I believe he is referring to a flat-head in the sense of an overhead-valve head with no combustion chamber in it, like the flat-head used on the unstyled "G", not an L-head as used on the GP. These heads are used to raise compression without changing pistons, as the unstyled "G" blocks were 1 inch longer to create the same compression with a flat head. Putting a flat head on a styled "G" will raise the compression, and I imagine that the same would hold true on an "A" or "B".
