Does anyone know of a 12volt starter that would fit a 730 diesel ES. the old 24V is on its last legs and i'd like to have a 12v neg. ground system.

E-Mail Me and I will give you all the poop on 12 volt 730D. We have two of them. THEY WILL START NOW IN THE WINTER. Go to the photo albam and click on to DEERE and type in 730 after DEERE and they are pictured.

I would question the ability of 12V to crank engine.

My 730D was half converted when I bought it (no 24v gen). I had the starter rewound to high torque 12v, installed a big 12v battery with big cables. The conversion doesn't work that well. Decompression is a must of course. The trick I learned is to put the trans. in neutral and engage the clutch. The extra mass of the belt pulley etc. spinning with the flywheel helps kick the engine over that first compression. This proceedure makes the 24>12v change more or less acceptable in 40f or warmer weather, not quite enough in cold. I'm thinking two 8v batteries in series for 16v would do the trick if I can figure out how to charge them.
