I got a "redline" brake controller for my 98' F-150 and when i plug in the trailer into the truck, the greeen light comes on like normal, when i go forward and hit the brakes, it dont work even at full power, it stays green, but when i go in reverse, it works, light is red and tires lock up, like it should, why does it only work in reverse? all the wires are correctly connected.

Joe,

Clooney is correct. One thing a lot of people don't do and should be done is run your power and ground wires directly to the battery. Should you not have the plug, which some did not have you will have to run each wire yourself.

On a '98 Ford under the drivers side, you should find a gray plug that has all the wires that correspond to your brake controller in it. Power, Ground, trailer-blue, and Stop light. Check to make sure you've got a good ground and as a last resort run the ground directly to the battery.

If none of that works return the Redline and get a Tekonsha 9035XP. In almost 10 years of putting this particular brake controllers on trucks. I have only had 2 bad. One installed improperly - customer hooked wires up backwards, and one that just wouldn't work. I have probably sold over a thousand. To me it is a great brake controller.

E-mail me if you have any problems.

Tony

Joe, I'm not familiar with the Redline brake controller. Is it a [Timed controller] or an [Inertia Activated] controller or a [timed with an Inertia Activated override]?
~If timed only you have a poor ground, incorrect setting or it isn't getting a brake pedal input in forward.
~If Inertia Activated it could be backwards or for some other reason the Inertia device isn't hanging or pointing correctly.
~If it is a timed with an Inertia Activated override it could have an incorrect or malfunctioning timer setting & the inertia is working in reverse.
~Make sure the trailer connection to the truck is making good contact [maybe it is only making a good connection when backing up]
~There should be a phone number that is on the installation instructions & the company should have a trouble shooting hot line, give them a call...
