I have I&T shop manual, I need to know the torque spec on the rod bearings, These are the shimmed type. The manual does not tell me anything.

Thanks, Gary

If you have I&T manual # JD-4 (A,B,G,H,D,M,MT), the torque spec is listed in the engine section under "Rod and Piston Units". The spec is 62.5 ft. lbs.

G-Man,

The best torque wrench I have is a Snap On dial type that's spec'd at ± 1%. Even some good click types go in 5 ft.lbs. increments and are ± 4%.

Who writes goofy specs like 62.5 and expects us mere mortals to get it right?

Steve

Especially considering the time period the specs were conceived in, lol. I have a Snap-On Torquometer that I believe is good to 250 in. lbs. (it rarely gets used), and then Snap-On TQ-series click-type torque wrenches for bigger jobs. One is for 0-100 ft. lbs. and the other is 20-250 ft. lbs. I have them checked and recalibrated periodically, as the two larger ones see quite a bit of use and abuse. There's no such thing as "good, cheap" measuring tools, be it torque wrenches, micrometers, dial indicators, or anything else. I would say that on those "G" bolts, anything between 60 and 70 ft. lbs. would be accurate enough.
