I have one more question, I checked the bearings on my G and it had 3 more shims on the bottom half of the bearing cap than on the top half, Just doesn't sound like it would ware evenly. If its not sopposed to be like this why may someone reasemble this way?

Gary, those old babbitted rod bearings are pretty forgiving, but you could measure the thickness of the shims and equally divide them among both sides, and then recheck your clearance. Those shims probably vary in thickness by a few thousandths, even if they are supposed to be the same thickness. I would suggest that you hold onto any shims you don't need, as I don't believe they are available from Deere anymore, and if you needed some in the future, you would have to find used ones or make your own. When I assembled my "G" engine the first time, I found that I needed a few more thin shims to increase my clearance some. I ended up cutting several out of pop cans to do the trick, which was rather tedious. When I go back together with it this time, it will be with inserted rods to eliminate the hassles of messing with shims.

You never know what you are going to find when you take one of these old tractors apart. Had a 49 G once that vibrated bad at higher RPM's. Clutch driver and flywheel in time. When opened up the engine had standard JD cast iron piston in # 1 and aluminum .045 in # 2. Go figure..... You should probably have no more than one shim off top or bottom...
