Bought this unit to work. I'm planning on making it very reliable and plan on doing most of the work in my shop. Here are a few questions that I hope someone can shed some light on.

1- When I engage the gears and release the clutch, there is a measurable delay before the tractor actually engages...maybe 1/2 to 1 second. Is this normal?
2- Left brake doesn't work unless the pedal is pumped. Is this something I can do easily..? I'm told the brakes are actually not on the wheel, but in front of it on an axle..
3- Hydraulics work well once the idle is set to fast. If unit is idling slow, there is virtually no hydraulic power available. Is this normal?
Front loader is a bit sluggish even at fast idle, and I'm wondering if it's a problem I should look into. Btw, all hydraulic fluids and filters were changed by owner before I bought this unit. Unit has 3,800 hours on clock. 4- I put conditioner in diesel, as it may be old. Motor oil and filter were changed by me, as oil was black. Engine starts easily, does smoke blue but seems to smoke less as it warms up. I guess I'll do a compression check soon. Is it normal for engine to growl and run a bit rough at full throttle? otherwise, it's smooth. At full throtle, it has a rasp. Maybe it's gasping for air? 5- Otherwise, unit seems well used, but not abused. Most lights don't work anymore...lol... I'll be wiring for quite a few hours. Any and all hints and tips on this type of unit are greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance

DG, I just worked on JD 400 loader and think there is an adjustment for the reverser that might help you, there is a slotted screw on the reverser valve facing the brake lines on the brake valve. Can't remember if it adjusted the time or the smoothness of the shifting from foward/reverse. Best to remove the step/foot pan to adjust and for the brakes. The brake valve has a couple cupped/frost plugs on top that need to be removed and 2 hex plugs on the bottom that can be removed and flush the valve out with oil. The lower plugs have springs and balls so watch out for them. Get a picture of the valve to go by. The valve is the low spot of the system and collects filings and junk that affects the brake operation. good luck chris

1...What you describe sounds normal for the reverser operation...When you release the foot pedal you are applying engagement pressure to a clutch pack and that takes a bit to happen...that is so you can shift the forward /reverse lever without using the clutch.
2...You can try bleeding the left brake. There is a bleed screw on top of each axle housing where it bolts up to the transmission case. Open it..push the pedal down for that side..close it.. and repeat 'til it is firm. If it happens again after sitting for awhile , then the brake piston seals in the axle will need to be replaced. That involves removing the affected axle housing
3...You will need a pressure gauge to chech pump pressure...should be 2300-2400 PSI ...Sounds like you have an internal leak (its a closed center hydraulic system) and the pump can't keep up with it , or the pump could be on its way out...They can be rebuilt unless the housing is worn. There are other possibilities too . Remove the suction screen in the bottom of the transmission to see if it is clogged...its behind the fitting that connects to that short hose between the filter housing and transmission case. Remove that fitting and slide out the screen....drain transmission first !!
4...There is a certain noise that they make...if it starts good in the cold weather , then I'd leave it alone...make sure it has good antifreeze ...Those engines get porous cylinder liners with cheap anti-freeze...

Thanks for the info guys...!!

I did the bleed for the left brake. Now time will tell if the seal on the piston is gone.

I think I goofed with the diesel filter. I put it on(it's the square glass type) and then proceeded to use the small lever to fill the glass bowl. Geez, after my nearly went numb from pumping with nothing going in the glass bowl, I finally thought, well, maybe this JD won't mind, so I started it...lol... well, now I'm sure there is an airlock in the system... how do I get rid of the air in the diesel lines?

first does the hoe still run?? if not then you will have a time gettting air out...you must pump up filter and yes with hand pump but make sure engine is turned over for you to get full stroke..bleed air there and keep pumping till the pump just quits..then remove hood and break lines at injector about 1/2 turn and hook up another battery source(charger or jumping it off) turn tractor over making sure that the lines are loose at injectors, sometimes they stick, remember the starter needs time to cool so don't crank too long at a time..when the lines start leaking diesel, keep engine turning and tighten them up..sometimes it will crank after a couple is tightened...the hyds get fluid from transmission pump..have you checked screen in transmission..and remember that transmission pumps pump about 11 to 13 gallons in good shape at pto speed...hope this helps..have nice day may good bless

Thanks for the help. I found out when I was using the hand pump with my son that it was used up. lol... after a 1/2 hr. of relaying and pumping, I figured there was something wrong. Got a new primer pump, and wham... it took less than 5 seconds to fill diesel filter. Then I did cranked the diesel line hookup to the back of the diesel injector pump and turned the engine over with starter. Once fuel got there, I then cranked open one of the diesel lines up on top of the motor, and it went fast from there. A few time cranking the engine and it fired. Now, I seem to have more power, and I figure it's from having a good pump and having more diesel to burn.

What a difference a simple pump does. I guess the other one was original and all worn out from constant work for years. 8-)
