I was wondering what anybody thought of the differences between a quage-range vs a powershift transmission and whether one is better than the other. I currently have a 4430 QR and have been thinking of upgrading to something like a 4440/4450. Spent quite a few hours years ago on parents farm in a 4440 QR and never remember any trouble, but don't have much experience with a powershift. I don't put a lot of hours on in a year, as farming is second job. Would mostly be used for field work. Any thoughts or experiences appreciated. I don't often post here, but spend a lot of time reading and learning, sometimes laughing. Great web site.

I like powershift transmissions, the quad range and the eight speed is probably a toss up but the 4450 15 speed is by far the best choice and the 18 speeds are probably even better. I don,t own any of the 18 sppeds but have the 15 speeds and one 4440 with the eight speed. When baling with large round baler and 15 speed I never use the clutch pedal, just the shift lever for stopping and starting. David B

Both are excellent transmissions, although each has it's own personality. The perma-clutch wet clutch system used in front of the quad-range is pretty much bulletproof, as long as you don't ride the clutch. Of course the powershift doesn't have a "clutch" per se, and the clutch pedal is simply an inching pedal that provides modulation for engaging the clutch packs in the front of the transmission. You don't want to ride the clutch on those either. The old eight speed powershifts are good transmissions, although they are a little rough and crude compared to the newer electronic powershifts. If you go with a 4440 PS, you'll have the eight speed. The 4450 will have the fifteen speed, which is very similar in operation and design to the eight speed, except that it has a hydraulically actuated two-speed in the front end of the trans, which is similar in operation to the lever-operated two-speed in the quad-range, which gives you the powershift between two speeds when the lever is bumped sideways. Basically it will all come down to what you intend to use the tractor for. If you're doing primarily field work, either will work well. If you're going to be using it as a loader tractor, the powershift might be the better option. With either option, I would have the trans thoroughly checked out before purchasing it, including checking pressures, operation and so on. Also check service history, as improper maintenance and operation will ruin any transmission quicker than anything.
