(not making it 24v) will it start allright with just one? what you all got in your 4020 and 4000, engine is a 404 disesl. Thanks.

For 3 months I've been using a Wal Mart car battery on my 69' 4020. It's an experiment, but one 12V is smaller than either of the 2 6V I took off. I live in South Texas where is no need to start it in cold weather. Maybe I have low compression, making it easy to start.

I have two 12 volts on my 4020 and have been pleased with how well it starts. A friend has two 6 volts on an indentical 4020 and it does not start near as well. The two 12 volts is the way to go.

The easiest way to explain it to some people is with 2 6v batteries, you will crank for a longer time but at a slower speed, 2 12v batteries you will crank for a shorter time but at a faster speed, and what I have seen it'll never start with a single 12v battery unless you make a different bracket to hold a truck style battery, one 12v battery that fits the original tray will never start a diesel tractor, JD uses one battery on the gas and lp gas tractors, but they start better with two batteries also. Buy the two 12v batteries and the cables to hook them up and you'll never be happier. chris

Steve, I see this as 2 separate questions. First, two sixes would be better IF their combined amp/hr rating exceeds that of a single 12, which is usually the case i.e two wimpy low amp/hr 6 volters may not necessarlily exceed the amp/hr capacity of one super heavy duty 12 volter. The bottom line regardign batteries and starting is the amount of stored energy the system (2 sixes, or 1 twelve, or two twelves in parallel) can provide to the starter, and more is better. Having said that, if you go to two 12 volters in parallell, you will probably have more stored energy available to feed the starter than just the two sixers. BUT AGAIN, its the total battery storage capacity available (add up amp/hrs of all the batteries) in which case two wimpy 6 volters may not have as much as capacity as a super 12 volter. The idea of two new twelves each of the same design and capacity of course, sounds like a winner to me. The condition and ampacity of the ground and starter cables and connections is about as important as the battery condition also. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

If you live in a cold weather area I would go for the 2 12 volt batteries. It definately gives that extra cranking power when the weather sucks, and you need your tractor.
