When I changed the clutch I had to disconnect everything. I have a 24v starting system, when I put it all back together, the key and push button start did nothing. Only way to start it is by using the old screwdriver technique. Anybody out there able to tell me good directions of how it should be hooked up? Like I said, I have a 1 position switch and a push button which should start it, the key switch has 6 contacts on it, 3 of them are connected.

Make sure both batteries are "grounded" to the frame of the tractor. The frame is part of the starting circuit. My I&T manual shows the right hand battery with a negative ground and the left hand battery with a positive ground.

Is there supposed to be a connection to the frame on the cable between the two batteries for the 12 volt appliancesto work with? If so is it perhaps missing?

Steve, this may get a little involved, but I'll try to lay it out as best as I can, although you may wish to get a wiring diagram for your tractor. Your tractor should be after serial# 91000 to have that arrangement, so heres the way the wiring should go. You should have two three-wire connectors on the back of the key switch. As you're looking at the back of the switch, the connector on the left should have a black wire, a blue wire and a gray wire - in that order from top to bottom. The connector on the right should have a green wire, a brown wire, and a white wire (although the schematic says not used by the white) - once again in that order from top to bottom. The push-button switch should have a black wire on it's left terminal and a yellow wire on it's right terminal. Providing all these connections are right, your tractor should start. If not, you could have a problem with the key switch, push-button, neutral-start switch, circuit-breaker and so on. Like I said, you'll probably want to get a schematic before tearing into it too far. Also make sure it is for the proper tractor, as the 4010/early 4020 manual shows several different schematics for the various models, serial numbers and fuel-types of tractors. If I had access to a scanner, I would simply email you a schematic. Maybe someone else with a manual can help you out with that. If you continue to have problems, email me and I will do what I can to help you through it. Good luck with the 4010.

p.s. - Please don't continue to start the tractor by jumping the solenoid, and go to your dealer and get a terminal guard for it when you get it going. Too many guys have been killed already doing that sort of thing.
