Just bought a 47 G and the starter gear would not engage the flywheel unless the clutch was engaged and the handle held forward while starting, and even then it would grind a lot. I loosened the flywheel and pushed it further on the shaft with the clutch in the engaged position (handle pushed forward). the starter engages now but my question is; did i get the flywheel up on the shaft far enough? the flywheel still has some overhang off of the shaft and there is a lot of play when the clutch handle pulled back, also hear a knocking when the tractor is running. Shouldnt the flywheel be close to flush with the end of the shaft? seem to remember it was on an unstyled A we had when i was a kid

When I built my G, I didn't have a clutch pulley for it, but put the flywheel on it anyway. When I finally got a pulley and installed it, the clutch would not engage. Come to find out the flywheel was too far up on the crank. I tightened the pulley and then set the endplay to .010. The endplay is measured from the main bearing case to the inside of hub of the flywheel. Be sure that your tractor has good oil pressure when you get the flywheel lined out. With the flywheel being that loose, it is a very good possibility that the crank could have hit the oil line going to the right main bearing. There is very little space between them when the endplay is set correctly. When there is too much endplay, the crank can move from side to side. Good luck!

Thanks jdeereg, My crank does move from side to side.It looks like though, if i push the flywheel further up on the shaft, the starter gear will engage the ring gear all the time. will try it though, i was thinking i had too much play in the crank.

Mine has about .125 from the end of the crank to the flywheel... You should have about .010 endplay.. I usually try to get it as little as possible.. Some time I have someone on the other side of the tractor.. hit the flywheel.. and then the crank on the other side.. the clutch trick will get you close.. but not as close as you need to me... If your start is not engaging, you are a LONG ways off... Good luck

Is endplay measured from the end of the shaft to the outside of the flywheel? the way i read your endplay reading, you have .125 of overhang. If that is the case, I am a long way off, my starter will only engage if the clutch handle is pushed forward. thanks for the reply
