I just replaced the bushing in the distributor for my B. I used an arbor press, went in straight, did not distort. Shaft fit just right. Be sure to fill the oil reservoir with oil after you are done. Be sure to use the correct oil-lite bushing, NOT a solid brass/bronze bushing. Anyone know what kind of oil to put in it? I lost my service information to a fire and can not look it up myself.

Jim, the bushing in the Delco distributor is long almost full length affair that supports the shaft pretty good. Depending on the shaft wear it will probably take most of the play out. The problem is installing it without damage. If you crush or distort it you will have to ream it to size or push a broach through it. The safe way is to install it is with a correct size mandrel to hold it's dimensions during the pressing operation. Caution; don't place the cap surface of the distributor on the press as the housing breaks easily.

Jim B,

If you're worried about the shaft, you could think about replacing it as well.

From memory, the window Delco's on 283 and 327 Chevies have bronze bushings on the top and bottom. Of course, they're turning faster than yours. Even so, it's important to take out the wobble as there's wisdom in the idea that it's not so much how much spark you have, but when that spark fires. Bouncing points don't help. Aftermark outfits like Mr. Gasket used to offer variable size bronze shim kits for Delco automotive distributors, there's an odd chance you'd have some luck with that. Worst case, a friendly machine shop could make a bushing for you.

good luck with it...

Steve
