Jimbo, it depends on the temperature you want to use it at, how much noise it makes & how much wear is on it.
~When new, the correct gear oil was 90 weight GL-1. If you have a noise problem then 140 weight will help that a little but with the use of 140 weight you get very poor cold shifting & very poor cold flowability so the bearings & any parts not submerged in the gear oil get poor lubrication at low temps.
~If only used in the summer or at higher ambient temperatures then 140 Weight GL-1 gear oil would be ok.
~You can use the modern GL-4,5,7 gear oil but it is a thinner base gear oil with a high EP content. That gear oil gives you a better cold lubrication but will probably be noisier, especially in the 1st reduction gear set as it doesn't cling to the gears as well as the old GL-1 gear oil. ~I use 140 weight GL-1 in my summer only play tractors & 90 weight GL-1 in my year round hard play or work tractors. In my tractors with a ring & pinion like the M through 430 I use a later GL-5 gear oil due to it's higher EP content & better scuff resistance...

Thanks..... .I just purchased this tractor and want to change out the fluids. Also noticed that gear lube is discolored and suspect some water has gotten in maybe around shift lever. The previous owner has made a make-shift seal around the shifter boot from intertube. Transmission is very quite so I may try the 90W GL1 for year round useage.

Jimbo, I don't know about your area but the Wall-Mart in my area carries 90 weight GL-1 gear oil in 5 gal pails for about $20.00 or so.....
