37G, there isn't anything in the starter that can be ADJUSTED for different voltage. The stock starter can be used on 6, 8, or 12 volts without any problems,as long as the cranking time isn't too long at the higher voltages. On the slow cranking; it could be due to poor cables or cable connections or undersized cables, or the fact your battery isn't charged enough, or even a bad starter. If it goes dead while running, it sounds like it isn't charging. [does the ammeter show a charge while running?]. ~If the ammeter doesn't show a charge while running you should check the generator for being wired correctly... [F] post on generator to [F] terminal on regulator,,,[A] post {larger of the two} on the generator to [GEN or ARM] terminal on regulator,,,you should have battery voltage at the battery wire hooked to the [BAT] terminal on the regulator. If it's wired per above then run the engine at fast idle & ground the [F] post on the generator & see if it charges [if it does, suspect bad regulator or regulator ground or open in field wire from generator to regulator. If it still doesn't charge, leave the [F] post grounded & run a jumper wire from the [GEN or ARM] terminal to the [BAT] terminal at the regulator, if it charges now you have a bad regulator, or open in the wire from the Generator [A] post to the regulator [GEN or ARM] terminal. If it still doesn't charge, pull the fan belt from the generator & remove both wires from the generator, then once again check for battery voltage at the [BAT] terminal on the regulator [if battery voltage is present] run a jumper wire from the [BAT] terminal of the regulator to the [A] post {larger of the two} on the generator, the generator should start to motor, then ground the [F] post , the generator should slow down. If it motors & slows down the generator is probably good, if it doesn't motor suspect worn brushes, broken brush spring, dirty commutator, open in the armature or other internal generator problem. If it motors but doesn't slow down suspect an open field, bad field brush, or broken internal wire. ~Any questions [probably] just post back..... ...
