I am sure clooney is tired of answering this kind of question but I am gonna ask it again cause I cant find it on the archives. I have a 1950 JD B. There seams to be a few things wrong. I can get it to start sometimes. But then after it dies the first time it will just fire everynow and then but otherwise nothing. What is the starting carb adjustment for the load and idle screws??? Also. It seams to turn over really slowly. Is this common on 6volt batteries??? How do you make it 12volt??? Also smoke comes out from around the pully when it is turning over. Any ideas??? Have rebuilt the mag and carb. have good fire. Any ideas on this problems??? Thanks for being patient.

One thing that nobody seems to mention is MOISTURE in the Mag..... !!!

It doesent even need to be enough to see on the inside of the mag cap, to cause miserable starting.!! I feel, moisture migrates into the mag, as the engine approaches operating temp... To get the moisture out, let it run at Operating temp for a good while. ( or WORK it!! ) Other than setting out in the rain, there is Nothing worse, than setting out on a moist nite, to have trouble..!!

Brad, I just got home and im tired n sleepy lol but heres a few more thigns which may help. On 6 volt systems to help cranking, I recommend 00 Gauge cables for battery and ground PLUS a super heavy duty high amp hour or CCA rated as will physically fit inside the battery box. Then once you install that fresh set of Autolite 388 or equivalent plugs and if the mag and carb has been rebuilt as you say and it dont fire right up, post back and describe the ailing symptoms and me or clooney or some of them other knowledgeable good ol boys on here will try and help more. Good Luck, Ol John T

Brad, start with the load needle [closest to the center of the tractor] about 1 turn out from seated & the idle needle [farthest from the center] about 2 turns out from seated. Then adjust the idle needle from there when hot, & adjust the load needle while working..
~The usual cause of failing to start after a stall while cranking is gasoline fouled spark plugs. Try installing new spark plugs Champion D-23 or Auto lite 388. Gap them to .035" if a distributor or non-Wico mag & .040" if a Wico mag.
Make sure the ignition wires are solid internal wire [not automobile carbon core TVRS type]. Clean & re-gap the points or better yet replace the points. Make sure the choke is closing completely & the throttle shaft bushings are in decent shape.
~On the slow cranking: that is one of the disadvantages with a 6 volt system. They can be made to work correctly but the battery, battery cables & ALL connections MUST be in good shape to get it to crank at a decent RPM. If it has a mag, the cranking speed isn't a big issue & as long as it turns over it should start.... With a distributor [especially a Wico distributor] the cranking speed becomes a bigger issue, it isn't the actual cranking speed but the voltage drop caused by the slow cranking that causes low coil voltage & therefore a weak spark. Clean all the cable connections, make sure the battery is grounded to the battery box or if the battery box is corroded or it's attachment is corroded run the battery ground directly to the rear housing. Make sure the cables are in good condition & are of a decent size [if little skinny 12 volt replacement cables replace them with a good heavy duty battery or welding cable]. If the battery is old, or won't hold a charge & crank very long, replace it also. If you are using thick oil change it to a multi-weight for the cold weather.
~On the smoke coming out during cranking, that is probably blow-by & could be one of the reasons it starts hard [some of the compression is by-passing the rings & getting into the crankcase then out the clutch area. If you have blow-by while cranking a 12 volt conversion will probably dramatically help the starting
~On the 12 volt conversion? Do you have a mag or distributor? If a distributor what kind? Do you want to use a generator or alternator? Are you familiar with basic electrical & mechanical work? Let us know & we will make some conversion suggestions....

OK I will try all of that tommorrow. As far as the 12volt goes. It has a wico X mag on it now. I do know a decent bit about mechanics and the electics of it but just would rather ask before doing to pervent messing anything else up. I will try the cables, gap, and plugs and let you know on how it helps. Thanks
