Torque Amplifier, Gr@@n mag had an interesting article on the tractor wars in the 50's, and early 60's. One of the lead guys from Deere (at the time) gave a presentation to dealers that talked about the ability of the Deere to "pull through" the bad spots, rather than "shifting down" as the TA did. He purported you'd get more work done by pulling through, than shifting through. (miles traveled per day, acres worked, etc).

At the time, he was probably dead on. Nowadays, with the many speed transmissions, shifting down and preserving RPM's is probably the way to go. Don't know how many "red" ones I drove during silage cutting (in the 60's) that came with the advice "The TA is out, don't try to use it".

My two cents,

Docster

You give me a 560 IH and you get a 720 JD. When we go plowing I'll lap your JD with no problem. Been there done that.

Joe.....in Caterpillar language that stands for "Turbocharged & Aftercooled" when referring to the way the engine is aspirated. The torque amplifier was really a big deal when it came out, I can STILL remember the tractor ads that touted it. The Allis-Chalmers D series also had the a TA system with something like 40% reduction in ratio.

The Allis people named their on the go speed changer Power-Director. It also served as the transmission disconnect for the live PTO with a neutral between the Hi and Lo positions. One functional difference between the early McCormick TA and most other on the go speed changers was the Lo speed on the McCormicks was free wheeling, that is there was no engine braking with the "torque" back.

Hi guys, I guess I can post on the JD board (we've got a JD4040 with cab and Quadrange). TA means Torque Amplifier. It's a shift-on-the-go high-low planetary gear setup mounted behind the clutch. First one came on the SuperMTA (Dad had one). Book says 22% slower ground speed in low with a 28% increase in torque. We never had any problems (yet). I still have my 1964 IH504 and the TA still functions well. (Ask the local pulling competition). The JD4040 has a TA built into each range in the transmission, which is really 4 ranges with 2 gears that are split with a power-shift (TA). The difference is on the JD, you must shift through the TA to go up or down through the gears. The IH has a separate lever for the TA, until the 5088 series came out. The "triple six" trans in the 5088's is set up with a range selector lever and a gear selector lever, like the JD Quadrange. A range selector lever, and the TA built into the gear selector lever. Sorry for the long post, hope this helps.

Actually the early T/A's in the 5-speed tractors, Your 504 included had 33% reduction and claimed 45% increase in pull power. The later tractors like 706/806 and the later 8-speed variations in the 56. 66 & 86 series had the TA with 22% reduction & 28% increase in pull power. The small rearend tractors up to the 686's still had the same 33% reduction as the early TA's. Dad had a Super M-TA and a 450 each for several years. We had a TA go out in the SM-TA, Then We learned the importance of keeping them adjusted and how to adjust them... Never had a problem after that.

But, do you know the Deere connection? Someone was telling me that Deere invented TA, and sold it to IH. Supposedly in the GM or some other publication.

Someone at Ford invented powershift and Deere bought it from them.

IH invented their own stuff, Deere had to buy ideas (like finally getting a 6 cylinder in 1960)

Torque Amplifier allows you to shift the tractor down on-the-go, another even more popular phrase with TA equipped IH tractors is the "Torques Out"

Torque amplifier. Steps you down about 1/2 a speed in each gear for the hard spots.
