Should a 1947 "A" John Deere use a 6-volt or 12-volt battery? The worthless battery that I recently removed from the tractor was a 12-volt but the tractor hasn't been started for 2 years. What did the 12 volt do to the points, coil and condensor--If the battery should have been a 6-volt? Thanks for the feedback!

Mike, to specifically answer your question, if it was designed for 6 volt (basically means it had a 6 volt coil) and you ran 12 what would it harm?? If a ballast resistir WAS added in series with the old 6 volt coil, the points and coil would not be harmed, because they would then (if ballast added) have seen the the same current and voltage as designed for. If it was 6 volt system and a 12 volt battery was installed and NO BALLAST RESISTOR WAS ADDED, the coil and points would each have drawn twice their intended current. If that were the case, the points would burn out alot quicker and the coil would draw excess current and run hotter than intended. The points can easily be replaced (should do that anyway) and the coil may or may not have been harmed, depending on the ambient temperature and number of hours of use. Theres a good chance it may be fine. Since your startign over, I would run a 12 volt battery and install a fresh set of points and condensor anyway. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff PS if you have generator problems, post back with any new questions

My John Deere "A" parts book printed in march of 1950, lists electrical parts for the "A" built after ser# 584000 as 12 volt and electrical parts built before that ser # as 6 volt. If your "A" has a battery box seat then most likely it came from the factory as 12 volt (positive ground)

The late A with the battery under the seat is 12 volt. I believe they originally came with 2 six volt batteries hooked in series.

SamH ----you are right...2 six volters.....hooked in series--My 47A came that way----I use a large high, cold cranking amperage, battery-it does just fine----- ----- --Mike you should pick up a repair manual,or shop manual-if your going to repair it.they have everything you need for info in it.
