I don't use the tractor too often, but recently I experienced a "popping/cracking" sound intermittenly out of the exhaust pipe along with a white puff of smoke. Some rain got into the intake however, I changed the oil in the air cleaner and also the crankase. Any suggestions?

David, if you ran it at all with that water in the air cleaner you could still have water in the air cleaner wire mesh & that could be getting pulled into the engine. Seeing as it won't burn, that could be causing the miss & smoke. ~If it rained enough to fill the air cleaner there is probably water in the mag & plug wire tubes also. You should pull the mag cap & clean that out & try to get the water out of the ign wire tubes. If any water got into the crankcase there is probably still moisture in there like up in the governor & rocker cover area, & that can get pulled in through the valve guides & intake pipe. Take it out & run it hard & hot for a while to get all the moisture out of it.

David, In very general terms, white smoke is often a sign of condensation or coolant or plain old water, while blue is oil and black excess unburned fuel. Has it sat out much lately in rain and got A LOT down the stack??? (That can cause valve and ignition and all sorts of problems) If a tractor isnt used much, moisture condenses in places and some smoke and all sorts of noises are possible until she gets all good and warmed up and all dried out. Possible sourses of that popping heard out the stack can be an exhaust valve hanging and sticking a little due to moisture or corrosion or varnish build ups. Are your valve lashes set okay?? Intermittent ignition misses and backfiring can also be moisture related which can cuase noise out the exhaust which either a good warm up/dry out or a tune up can help (how are the wires and plugs and points???). If wires intermittently discharge their energy to the frame as opposed to the plug, or there are carbon or moisture paths inside the cap, noises are again produced. If you have already changed the air breather and crankcase oil, youre on the right track, and maybe an upper cylinder lube like Mystery Oil or a detergent additive like Rislone etc may clean things up a bit. I think a good heavy hot long period of use may help as much as anything with additives to remove any water in the fuel and detergents and upper cylinder lubes to free thigns up folowed by another oil change. If you keep gettign water or white smoke or steam out the exhaust, post back and we may have to talk about head gasket leaks or cracks (YUK sure hope not) etc. Good Luck and let us all know.
