Working on a generator from a 1942 B for a friend. Generator is a model number 1101371 S/N 1J22 which is correct for that tractor according to my books. It is a three-brush genrator. It has the 2 terminal cutout relay. My curiousity really took off when I noticed that on the cutout relay, the topside of one terminal is labeled "BAT" and the bottom side of the other terminal is labeled "BAT". Two wires come to the generator, one attached to the "BAT" topside labeled terminal of the cutout and the other attached to the "F" generator terminal. The opposite terminal on the cutout attached to the "A" generator terminal. Any comments on why two "BAT" terminals on the cutout and whether or not it is wired correctly? I have service manual SM-2029, but the diagram on page 80-5-5 isn't very clear in the area of the dash wiring. Thanks for your comments.

Ron, you have one of those fortunate scenarios where a simple reversal of the cut out relay should answer your question, and havign it wired in reverse shouldnt really hurt anything on a temporary basis provided nothing else is done wrong or shorted. Many of the general purpose after market garden variety dual polarity cut outs Ive seen are marked + and - ground to show you which way to run them for your system and it sounds like thats what you indeed have. If its not marked, try her either way and polarize her and it should work. If not, post back and we will go from there. Good luck, Ol John T

Mn, some of the replacement cut-out relays will work either polarity by just reversing the direction of the cut-out. The cut-out is basically a magnetic relay that makes a connection when the generator voltage is higher than the battery voltage. It could be wired correctly or it could be backwards [depends on whether it's a negative or positive ground by default]
~Make sure you always have battery voltage at the [BAT] terminal on the cut-out that is hooked to the wire coming from the ammeter & make sure the wire going to the [F] terminal goes to the headlight switch & has some resistance to ground [lights off] & is fully grounded [lights on].
~When all is hooked up, polarized the generator, just momentarily run a jumper wire from the [BAT] terminal on the cut-out to the [other terminal] with the wire going to the generator [A] post, if you see a spark you are done. ~When it is up & running it should show a charge when the generator is charging & show no discharge with the tractor off. If it doesn't show a charge when running, jump the [Bat] to the [A] terminal on the cut-out & see if it charges, if so the cut-out might be in backwards so try reversing it. If it still doesn't show a charge try grounding the [F] terminal on the generator to see if that makes it charge, [if so you have an open in the wire from the [F] post to the light switch, or it is hooked to the wrong light switch terminal, or the switch is defective.....
