46 B Someone Tell Me the Bad News

I had drained the water out of my 46 B for the winter. This weekend I was going to use it a little so I filled it with water. When I fired it up it threw water out of the radiator. Not just a little, more like a tidal wave. Seem to run OK but does have a cough and sputter every once in awhile that it didn't last fall. I first thoughts are a cracked block that is releasing compression into the water jackets. Maybe it had some sort of air bubble that it burped out? It threw the radiator cap off but it just for the most part sits on there as the flange in the cap is broke. Any thoughts?

Jeff, your problem [if you even have a problem] could be almost anything.

~Run it a while & see if it gets better, maybe it was an air-lock?

~If you left the drain plug out, mice might have gotten into the cooling system [never leave those drain plugs out, just leave them in but loose].. Mice really like to climb up into those old Deere cooling systems & build nests for some reason [maybe because the barn cat can't fit in there with them]..

Jeff,

Sounds like there is some sort of compression getting into the water jacket. Possibly the head gasket.... If all the water was drained there wouldn't be any reason the block was cracked from the cold weather. Did you keep the drain plug out the whole time? If you take the spark plugs out you might be able to see if there is a different look to one of them, this could point you in the right direction of the cylinder it is...

Hope this helps
