Hi everyone! I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction....

I have a jd 316 with the 18 hp onan engine. Recently, it's been stalling out. It only does this after I've been using it for a while (ie, the engine is good and warm). Frequently when it stalls, it's almost as if someone shuts the key off, ie, the engine pretty much just dies. Sometimes it will sputter, but it mostly just dies. Then, I'm unable to restart it until it's cooled down for 5 or 10 minutes. If I try restarting it before that, it doesn't fire at all. It'll also do this in Neutral with the PTO off and I've bypassed the seat switch for testing so I don't think it's a problem with the seat safety switch. It's been to the dealer but of course it wouldn't stall out on him. But he checked the 'coil' and changed the plugs for good measure. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jeff. I work for a JD dealership and I have seen this problem quite a few times. Your coil is getting hot and breaking down, it needs replaced. Also when you replace the coil the trigger module behind the flywheel will need to be replaced also. You can't do one with out the other as the updated coil will still drive you nuts because of an old trigger module. Replacingthe coil is easy(watch for poliarty) but you will have to remove the engine, blower schroud, and flywheel to gain access to the trigger module! Most of the new JD mechs. don't know this and drive there customers nuts with the unit still failing. Email me if you have any questions.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! Just a couple followups. Regarding needing to replace the coil...I did take it to a JD dealership about a month ago. They couldn't reproduce the problem but said they did check the coil and it was fine...Pat, is it possible it could really be a bad coil (like you said) and they just mis-diagnosed it? I'll also have check the 'relay' as Don suggested, or have the dealer check it next time I have it in. And Larry, the dealership said they changed the gas in the tank because there was some water and also checked the air filter and said it was fine. Not sure about the fuel filter. I'll check the tank myself for sediment to be sure and maybe change the fuel filter. Thanks again!

Change the fuel filter and look for sediment in the gas tank. My Dad's 265 did the same thing and it was a clogged filter from dirt in the tank. After running awhile the sediment mixed with the gas and clogged the filter. After sitting it would run again. A new air filter wouldn't hurt either.

look for a relay on the tractor, had one doing same thing. should be black with 2 wires, about 1 inch long and 3/4 in. wide. when they start to go bad they will get warm and shut it down. it acts like a condenser.hope this helps. don
