just bought a model 40 i knew it had a few problems when i bought it, changed the oil and had small amount of coolant in the oil. tore down the engine last night and the head had a freeze plug missing and the valve seats are so bad i had to cut them out. when i install new head gasket will i need any type of sealer around the head bolts or just use nothing and make sure its torque sequence is correct (95 lbs). also can i remove the pistons from the top of the block without splitting the tractor in half to remove the block?? there is a slight ridge at the top of the cylinder walls but if i remove that will that work? thanks

Bill, have the head surfaced while it is off the tractor. I always use sealer on the entire head gasket [except the fire rings]. The pistons should come out the top, but the ridge will have to be removed or you risk damaging a piston ring groove & risk top ring damage on the new rings due to the top rings hitting the ridge.

Bill, everytime I remove the head from a 40 thru 430, I take it to my local machine shop. Most of them will have a hairline crack. I have them magnafluxed and the crack repaired if possible. Also I replace valve guides, seats and valves if needed. As Clooney mentioned, have it surfaced also. You will not believe how much better one will start and run with a good head job. Usually if they don't need new valves, my machine shop only charges around $75 for the work. Yes, you can replace the rings and rod bearings by only removing the head and oil pan. Cut the ridge out of the cylinder wall and hone it good. Check for excessive wear and scoring on the walls. These engines can stand a good bit of cylinder wear without reboring. A new set of standard rings will be .010 oversize.
