Hi and Happy New Year,
Got an easy question for the one who knows the answer.
Can The "Bypass cooling system" illustrated on (page 46 of Nov. 2002 issue of GM) be bolted into a 1948 model B without modification?? If so, tell me what you know. I would like to do it, but only if everything would line up without major modifications. I asked Mr Thinker, but I guess he did'nt think much of my question, never heard a word. Thought maybe somebody out there has done or tried it.
Thanks much;
Jim H.

jim, i don't think the radiators will swap out. your 48 still has a thermo-cool system on it and the 50 has a water pump. the pipes leading to the engine will not mesh up. also the 50 has a smaller top cap on the rad as it is a pressure system. the b is unpressurized. the hole in the hood is too big on the b in short no it won't work without modification

If you read carefully you will see that Mr. Hammel isn't asking to swap radiators even though that's the title of his post. He is asking if he could install the "bypass cooling system" from a late 50 to a B. The bypass cooling system is a pipe taking coolant from the block side of the thermostat back to the water pump so there is circulation through the block and water pump prior to when the coolant temperature gets up to the value needed to open the thermostat. Theory is that this prevents uneven coolant temperature in the block during warm up. I'm not real familar with the B cooling system so can't answer Mr Hammel. My 50 is a 1955 and has the bypass system being asked about. That bypass system came into use on 50s beginning at S/N 5029200.
