We have a 37 A that was running just fine a couple of weeks ago. Went out to start it today and had to pull it. After we got it running it wouldn't run unless the choke was almost all the way engaged. I had something similar to this happen on an Oliver we have and had to put a new needle and seat in the carb. Any ideas on something to look for before doing that?? Thanks!!!

Before one gets to far try spark plugs I had problems there maybe points+condensor. If they are bad it will act the same.

Jeff, if it ran good a short time ago & doesn't now, the first thing that comes to mind is the fuel shut-off or tank selector valve isn't turned completely on, or not set to the correct tank. If the fuel is turned on & tank selector valve set correctly, then make sure someone hasn't changed your carb load & idle needle settings. ~If all ok per above, then do as Gordon said & open the carb drain & make sure you have a pencil sized stream of fuel for at least 30 seconds. [if not find out why]
~If the fuel flow is good, suspect a piece of dirt or rust has entered one of the carb fuel circuits or is plugging the holes in the side of the main nozzle. If you suspect dirt in one of the carb fuel circuits you can try removing the carb intake elbow & running the engine at fast idle then placing your hand over the carb intake until the engine almost stalls, do this a few times & if the blockage isn't too bad the reverse vacuum pulling fuel back through the carb passages might dislodge the blockage. [it wouldn't hurt to pull the main nozzle & check the little bleed holes]
~The information you furnished sure points to a fuel problem but there are other factors that could cause a runability problem & a rich carb mixture could partially cover a weak ignition problem. If the fuel flow checks out ok & the problem doesn't seem to be carb induced, post back for other things to check.

Thanks guys! I'll check all of that tomorrow and see what happens. I know there is fuel to the carb as we checked the drain and it came out although we didn't let it run for 30 secs. so I'll do that in the morning. Near as I can tell the adjustments weren't moved so if I have good flow I'll unhook the air and try that. I'll be sure to let you know when we get it figured out!

thanks!

Did you check for water in the fuel or gas flow. Open the drain cock on the carb leave it open 30 seconds. See how fast the fuel flows through the carb.
