Its slow to start on cold mornings, but runs fine when its starts and then starts with no problem after ir warms up. Is this common with the smaller John Deere's? Could the injector pump be the problem? Thanks for the help.

Tim,have you checked timing? It could be off a little from wear of gears.Wiggling steering wheel From side to side if equipped with PS while cranking can help sometimes releave hyd. pressure or adding a destroking screw to main hyd. pump.Jim B

Are you useing a winter blend diesel fuel. On those tractors they used a throw away pump they were maybe 3" tall. They rebuild them now or they changed them to a standard rosa master like on the 3020.

If you haven't already, you might want to replace the fuel filters. This seemed to help my 4020D.

Tim,
All the JD New Generation tractors in the diesel variety are hard to start when it is cold. You need 2 things to get it going. Number one is a strong battery and number two is a 2500 watt block heater to heat up the coolant system. A warm engine block almost guarantees an easy start. I know this from first hand experience having gone through what you are now.

Tim,

My 1020 is a gas, so no direct experience to offer. But I suspect that while guys with Diesels smirk when I'm changing plugs, points and condensors, the comeuppance you get is the sluggish behavior of any Diesel when there's even a hint of chill in the air.

The manual shows an ether port right up on the dash. Might help, but I wouldn't put it on a steady diet of it.

Not all of the 1020 diesels came equipped with an ether port; this may have been an option.
