I have a '49 A with a lot of slop in the steering. I have tightened up evrything in the steering box, the play appears to be in the bottom end, possibly where the vertical shaft attaches to the rolomatic. I can see two cross pins in the rolomatic, are these what attache the shaft? And is there a trick to geting them out?
Thanks!!!
Jim

Jim, if your play is indeed in the spindle to roll-o-matic attachment that is a dangerous situation & the lower spindle is apt to break off. The roll-o-matic is [was] either pressed on or cast on the shaft with a very tight fit & those pins are swedged in & expanded during the process. About the only way to get the pins out is by drilling.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any place else the play could be? I watched the steering gears while someone else moved the steering wheel. The box is good, no play. I have had the rolomatic apart and checked everything there. Have you ever seen one with play betwwen the shaft and rolomatic? This tractor is almost impossible to drive at any speed at all due to the slop, the entire spindle wobbles so bad.
Thanks again,
Jim

Jim, yes, I have seen tractors with play between the lower roll-o-matic & the spindle [usually just before they broke off]. Have someone turn the steering wheel & watch the lower spindle area to see if the spindle is turning inside the roll-o-matic housing. The other place to look at is the upper spindle to sector gear [if the gear or spindle splines are worn the spindle will turn inside the sector gear]. Have someone turn the steering wheel & look at the upper sector gear to spindle for dissimilar movement....

Just finished my 60 today, new top bushing, new cork on bottom and gasket and new plate on bottom, bearing was almost new, my big problem was sector gear was worn , couldn't move it but spline on the spindle would move inside of gear when you moved wheels, grabbed tires and moved them that way. got different gear and was better but i shimmed it 5 thousands between the splines on the gear and shaft. no movement now. don c
