I have another block for the 1946 John Deere model A and would like to know if a standard A block could be bored to accept John Deere model 70 pistons. Will the wrist pins be a differnt size
requiring a person to weld portions of a model 70
piston and rod to the model A rod ? I believe there is only a slight difference in the stroke. I
believe the bore of the A block is 5 and 1/2'' and the 70 pistons would need at least a bore of 5 and 7/8 '' . I think this tractor may pull in the 4500 pound class as it does not have the much
heavier cast rear wheels.

The 1950 John Deere model A also has the lighter
steel rear wheels ( not cast ). This tractor has
the newer ,
single shift lever type of transmission and my brother just overhauled the engine. It runs very
strong and has the very slow first gear in the transmission. I think this tractor may have to pull in the 5500 pound unless one could remove the
roll-o-matic front end and replace it with a split
pedestal type of front end for a lighter weight.
I thought about power blocks , but the price tag
for these seems to be in the range of $1000 -$1500. Thanks in advance for any information you
John Deere folks might have for me.
