Just bought a 40.When I bought it the generator was disconnected(no belt) and the 6 volt battery was wired to a neg ground. Were any 6 volts wired to a neg ground?Anybody know why this might have been done? Thanks

Andrew, all 2 cylinder JD Tractors, and even some of more cylinders untill they went to alternators, were originally equipped as POSITIVE Ground. Why yours was reversed, especially when it wanst converted to an alternator, is anyones guess. If it still is negative ground however, the coil should now be wired so the little + terminal receives power from the ignition switch, while the opposite small - terminal is wired to the distributor. Also, if it has an ammeter, if its wires werent reversed, it would read backwards, which a wire reversal would correct. Good Luck, hope this answers your question, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Andrew, there were no [2-cylinder farm tractor] Deere 6 volt negative ground systems [at least that I know of].

~Probably no one knows for sure why someone wired your 6 volt tractor as negative ground, but the usual cause is not knowing any better.

~With a generator, polarity really doesn't make any difference as long as the ignition coil & ammeter are wired accordingly, the proper voltage regulator used & the generator is polarized for the battery ground used....

It should be positive ground. Most likely the person that did it just didn't know what they were doing. You can get a wireing diagram and some other info at this site. Link
