I dealer down the block has a 2010 they took in trade a few years ago. They rebuilt the engine (don't know what exactly they did) supposedly. Tractor is supposedly in fair condition. They say it needs a carb because theone they have leaks gas and they can't get it to stop.

They want $2000 but alluded to the fact that they would consider less. I assume I could get it for $1800.

I know the 2010 has a crummy reputation especially the hydraulics. The gas ones seem to have a slightly better reputation then the diesel.

What do you think? Worth taking an $1800 chance on it plus $150 for a rebuilt carb? Main use would be mowing.

I forgot to mention that the expanding disc brakes really suck.

I have a 2010 row crop gas that I have used a lot for many years. They are a lot better that their reputation, but they need an owner that understands how they work. The hydraulics are excellent but complex in the way you switch them for function. The biggest problem is the filter, which is a $60 plus dollar item obtainable only from Deere and will clog regularly, which power steering is the first thing to go. You can usually wash them and take off again in 30 minutes. I would not begin to compare the capability of an 8n or H farmall to what a good 2010 can do. You have 3pt. remotes, power steering, independent pto, and 40plus horses.

Bama, The 2010 is a good tractor with a bad reputation. The first couple of years they were plagued with diesel engine problems and hydraulic problems. The hydraulic problems were fixed but it was too late for the reputation. Tractors were repaired and manufacturing was updated up until #42000. 42001 and up incorporated all the updates and fixed (?) the problems. If the tractor you're looking at is a late model tractor above 42001 it should be fine. Any of the older ones that are still around have probably been fixed a long time ago. The carburator is a simple Marvel-Shebler. These are easy to rebuild unless cracked or broken. Make sure to hear it run and work the hydraulics and feel the clutch. The price is right if you like Green.

Curious! Is this a row crop with narrow front or rowcrop utility with big rears and wide front or utility with the small rims? Remote hydraulics? Let me know if you get it, and if not where it's located; I may be interested!

I have a 1965,2010 that I purchased about 15 years ago.I've used it extensively for mowing and raking hay and alfalfa. All I've ever done to it is change the oil and about every two-three years new points. For some reason it eats points. I put an alternator on it soon after purchase, so it would charge better when raking. I certainly can't complain about this tractor.

Binder,
At that price a 2010 gets interesting. It should do a lot more mowing than an 1800 dollar lawn tractor, and it's probably less than half the price of something like a 2020. But then there are other alternatives. 1800 isn't that far away from a late model JD A or B that's in good working condition. If you consider switching colors - that kind of money should also get an 8N, Farmall H or M, or Allis WD that's in good condition. The upside there is that money you put into a more marketable or popular model might increase its value, plus they're a lot more "sellable". No fun to be in a position like your dealer having tried to sell a tractor for two years.

Another factor is just pure emotional. If you don't really like it now - or have missgivings about it now, it's almost guaranteed that the first time Murphy's law operates and something does go wrong, you'll begin to hate it. On the other hand, if you like the way it looks, have some memories of a 2010, and so on; you're more likely to take the problems that occur along the way in stride.

best of luck with whatever you decide....

Steve
