I am posting this message for a friend. He has a John Deere 420U tractor and wants to put a loader on it . Can this be done without too much trouble and where would he find one. Are new ones still available or does he have to search the scrap yards. How much of a job would it be? Thanks in advance for your reply!

I have a 420U with a "Lord" aftermarket loader on it and it works really nice. Mine has a seperate front mounted hydraulic pump that drives off the crank pulley and a seperate resevoir (the loader frame) so the original hydraulic system is untouched. Several manufacturers made loaders that would fit on this tractor. I like to "Lord" the best as it is well built and fits and works well. I Keep the adjustable front axle at the shortest position to reduce the stress on it. They have been known to bend or break if abused. Also power steering would be nice, but I don't have it and it is not necessary. If you are moving, it steers OK even with a fully loaded bucked and I have a 6 foot snow bucket on it. It is my helper around the place. It does my heavy lifting, carrying and pushing. I would be lost without it.

Where can I find a Lord front end loader? Are they still available new or do I have to search the salvage yards? Are any new loaders still available for this tractor?

Jim

I checked my #35 Series 1 loader manual and it says it will pop right on a 420U. If you find one of those old critters make sure the mounting brackets are included in the package. Also they came in different hyd configurations. Say if it came set up to be used on a tractor with a remote valve and you want to mount it on a tractor that don't have a remote, you will have to dig back in the pocket for a loader valve and mount, plus the plumming materials. Doing the above conversion can cost over $200.

My 420U has a Henry loader fittedon it with front mount pump. I have loaded tires, rear wheel weights, and a welded steel platform on the back on which sits a 45 gal barrel filled with gravel.THAT is a lot of weight and it is balanced correctly, that is just by the time it starts spinning in 1st it stalls out.
