Adjusting Model B Carb....

Thank you all for the previous help with my problem. I will try all those suggestions to see if any help. The main problem I guess is that the old B just doesn't run smoothly no matter what I do with the carb. At low idle, it will pop a little flame out the stack (I have a straight stack on it) when I move from half or higher throttle to idle quickly. One suggestion was to check the oil in the air cleaner-I'll bet that could be the problem. She seems to not be missing or anything, but just not so smooth as previously.
I just got through replacing the manifold-the old one had a hole in it-a major undertaking for me. It seems like it might be some sort of timing problem, but I just don't see how-I reset the timing so that the upper plug (left ) hits at exactly TDC (or at least as close as I could get.) I even took a piece of metal and felt the top of that piston to check and see that the flywheel's TDC was the true TDC (or LH Impluse as the wheel says.) I also suspect it could be gas-related. I am using AVGAS, but although it is high-octane, it is at leat 4 or 5 months old. Thanks for your help-
-Iam still pretty new at working on engines like this and can use all the help I can get.

Hi again Jeffro, I will address potential idle problems, it looks like fuel and flame were addressed below. It also looks like you have tried the carb adjustments we posted below. Look for signs of exhaust leaks like black or burn colors around the new manifold base or the pipe to manifold union etc.

1) Vacuum leaks can cause idle problems, have her at slow idle and spray WD 40 or Carb Cleaner or an unlit propane torch all around the carb especially its throtle shaft and around the manifold and carb gasket etc and if she speeds up or smoothes out,you have located the source of a vacuum leak. Make darn sure the idle stop screw goes back and bumps the lil vertical spring thingy on the carb top and thats (screw and spring) what sets the slow idle speed. You might remove the carb to governor linkage and see if you can manually make her idle better??? Let us know if so..... . The governor rod to carb linkage should be adjusted so at wide open hand throttle and wide open carb top throttle, the rod is about 1/2 hole short of dropping into the carb Is it????? ?

2) Try adjusting the timing to see if it helps, but Im thinking more of fuel or leak problems curently.

3) Inspect the air cleaner bowl for it being clean, water free and not overfilled, but I dont suspect that as a problem right now.

4) Remove the distributor cap (mag or ditstibutor) and check it for moisture, cracks, or carbon traces. That can cause all sorts of problems.

5) Clean or even replace the plugs if they are not in tip top shape and not blackened up or coated or fouled. Make sure the plug wires are wire core NOT carbon auto suppresor types.

6) Finally, I would drain the aviation gas and replace with regular 87 octane gas and let the tank and fuel system and carbs lower drain all flush out.

Good Luck let is know jmn50@msn.com

Jeffro, a couple of things come to mind, especially if it is.... " not missing or anything"..

~The first would be that you have a leak at the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe to manifold area.. If there is ANY air being pulled into the exhaust system on engine over-run [coast] it will pop like crazy out the exhaust pipe when the throttle is closed or at low throttle openings... [that would be my first guess as to your problem].... Try placing your GLOVED hand over the exhaust pipe & see if exhaust comes out of the manifold or manifold to pipe joint, if so, repair that first..

~Another possibility is you have weak intake valve spring(s).. Weak intake valve springs will allow a high engine vacuum to pull the intake valves open on over-run or engine decel.. [a long shot but if nothing else found suspect the intake valve springs]

~Another possibility is the carb idle stop spring is missing, bent, or misadjusted.. If that spring is missing [or the idle screw is mis-adjusted] it will allow the carb throttle plate to snap closed & cause all kinds of metering problems until it opens back up a little...

~Your problem doesn't really sound mag related but ignition problems can cause all kinds of side issues so you can't rule it out...

~On the av gas issue,, I don't know why you are running that stuff but as Will said it ignites harder & makes less power than cheap regular gas in a low compression tractor engine... If you are running it for the lead that's in it, just use a small amount of av gas with each fill up of regular gasoline.. A little lead goes a long way..

I am sure Clooney will say this to you too. DO NOT USE avgas in the low compresion engine. It will run better on the cheapest, lowest grade gas you can find. Unless you have 9:1 compresion and the carb to back the avgas up with. Put in 87 octane gas in and see how it runs.

My 2 cents
