Working on a 51 B, after fulling charging the battery and connecting (positive ground and all) the starter turns engine over very slowly. It never turns engine much more than a full revolution or so without stopping then does it again and stops and again and again all the while I'm holding the starter buttom. I'm sure the engine would start if I could ever get the starter to remain engaged continuously. What can I do or what am I overlooking? All battery cables are clean and tight. Thanks for your help.

Jeff, does the starter actually stop turning while cranking, or is the starter drive kicking out with the starter still turning?

~Even when those 6 volt systems are fully functional they are no ball of fire when cold, so somewhat slow cranking in cold weather is normal.

~If the starter actually stops, or slows down to almost stopped, you might try pulling both plug wires from the plugs [if mag equipped]. Or cranking with the ignition switch in the off position [if distributor equipped] to see if that makes a difference, if so, suspect an ignition timing problem causing the timing to be too far advanced therefore causing a problem cranking. If pulling the plug wires & cranking makes a difference, post back & tell us if it has a mag or distributor for proper timing procedures.

~If the starter drive is kicking out while cranking post back & tell us that also.

~If the starter is stopping while cranking & pulling the plug wires doesn't help, see John's post below....

Jeff, If the motor isnt dragging or been siezed up or has problems that make it hard to turn, then the problem about has to be either a defective starter, or a defective starter switch, or a weak battery. Can you try using a different battery or batteries or jumping yours and see if she still cranks slow?? If she has good rated and clean tight cables and connections, and different batteries still crank her slow, then I suspect a bad starter or bad starter switch. Do you have 0 gauge battery and ground cables (12 v system) and all connections and grounds clean and tight?? or 00 Gauge if its a 6 volt syatem?? if you have very small cables, that can be a problem.

If any different battery or batteries or jumping still cranks slow, I would first remove the starter switch and see if its burned or pitted or carboned up and clean and wire brush or replace it, and if the starter post is burned down or all pitted, and cleaning and wire brushing or filing it smooth still doesnt make her crank any faster, it may need a new or repaired or rebuilt starter.

Weak or underrated batteries or bad battery or starter or ground cables or that switch and any or all can cause slow cranking, assuming the engine is free to crank as normal.

Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff
