I have people write me a personal check, I dont mind taking them as long as there bank is close to me. All I have to do is go to that bank and get it cashed, once that happens it is on them as to weather it is good or not. If I take it to my bank and it bounces it is on me. Works for me, but I have been fortunate enough to have good honest people to deal with. But that is a scam you speek of, I have had it myself

Brad,Cashing the check means nothing,if it
bounces after you cash it,it gets charged back
to your account, banks are not that stupid, there
always protected. If you didn't have an account
there they probably wouldn't have let you cash
it,but only deposit it.A local check usually
takes 3 days to clear,an out of state check up
to 2 weeks,in the mean time the bank collects
interest off your money while your waiting for
it to clear.

There must be a few stupid banks out there, I've done it that way for several years. I go to the bank the check is drawn on, they can look up the account to see if the check is good because it is one of their customers. If it is good they cash it for me and I'm on my way with cash. I have no account at any of them except my own bank. Knock on wood, I've never had a bad check but they wouldn't cash it if there wasn't enough in the account. Checks are covered as they come into the bank they're drawn on, so if it is good when you are there it doesn't matter what happens afterword.

They tried that on me last month. Tell him where to go, if you know what I mean.

any time you go monkeying around with serious money, one better watch out.....I always get a certified check for the amount of the sale only. Sometime get cash, obviously however some folks don't want to travel with large sums of cash. Once you get a certified check on the buyer's bank, there is no stop payment on these. Of course I guess if they were stolen or something, could be different.

Something similar to that happened to my cousin. He called the Attorney General and they said to stay away from it. He was offered $4,800 for his tractor, but they were going to send a check for $9,000. They wanted him to cover all arrangements and pay for shipping to Africa.

YES it's a Scam. I've received several offers of this type. However, I didn't just fall off the turnip wagon. Some of these deals have even been paid for by cashiers check. About 3 weeks down the road, after your tractor and money are gone, the ck turns up as "stolen" and the whole amount is charged back to your account. There just ain't NO free lunch.
