1929 GP piston rings

Question is-- cyl seems to be standard size 5 and 3/4 in. It is worn some and the standard rings have a gap that is too big for specs. Is it OK to get .045 over rings and file the ends to get correct gap or should I just get standard size and have a large end gap. Thanks Marty Z

Hi Marty, if you decide to go with the .045 rings I thing I have some.
Seen Mike Sat and he said you were ordering GP parts, good to hear you got it going back together now.
I run the .045's with worn standard bore on my pulling D for 3 years., just be sure to folow Cooney's instructions.

I ran into the same problem. I called Otto Piston and he had a gapless ring which would make up some bore wear differences. Since I was only putting together a show tractor, I used the gapless rings. I have not had any problems. I have so much compression that I cannot turn the engine without opening the petcocks. Give Otto a call and he will discuss rings with you. He is very good.

Marty, what rings to use will depend on ring end gap in the tightest part of the cylinder bore. The rings MUST be fitted to the TIGHTEST point in the bore that the rings run in. Use a piston to push a ring down to the bottom part of the bore & measure the end gap there. If you fit to the top loose part of the bore the rings will be too tight when at the tight point & will gall or break. If the gap ends up too big at the top of the bore you either have to run them like that or re-bore.
