Has anyone installed power steering on a 1020 that does not have power?
I have located a 1020 gas but would like to have power steering since I may install a loader.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

if your tractor i a manheim tractor then you have the four piston hydraulic pump that shold be replaced with an 8 piston pump.
you will need a steering valve assy. main pressure tube with an exit for the steering and pressure tube for the steering.
you will need to change the steering shaft (it's different between power and manual steering).
you will have to install a pressure control valve (which is a steering priority valve) and remove a ball plug in the transmossion housing under the pressure control valve.
if you have the four piston pump, you will also have to add a low contol valve spool and spring to yhe rockshaft housing.
if you have a scv, then the pressure tube to the scv will have to be replaced.
all this applies to a closed center steering.

You mite try pricing a used power steering valve at a salvage yard. Have your serial number handy as there was a change in valve units at tractor ser# -45199 and a different unit from 45200+.
You will also need the two piece oil line from the main pump to your pressure adjusting valve. this line tees in the middle to provide oil for your steering valve. You will need that short line also. I dont think Steve is wrong with his cost estimate for new deere parts. But with salvage stuff you mite cut the cost by 50%. Keep in mind that the salvage unit may need a rebuild kit from Deere so it wouldnt hurt to price that and then figure what your options are.

Rog,
I have a 1020 gas with factory power steering. I don't know of any aftermarket kits for them. The replacement parts are a bit off the scale. I saw the replacement power steering pump for mine listed at over $1,000.00 at the JD dealer. You can get rebuilt parts from places like Abilene machine -- but I'd guess you're in for 1500 to 2000 in parts with rebuilds. Sorry -- can't offer much good hope.
