Two questions-#1 In restoring an old tractor clutch or really any other system is it necessary to completely disassemble. Mine was dirty but after scraping and washing with diesal/kerosene it looks just pretty good and not badly worn. The operating sleeve and the pulley bearing etc appear in good shape.
#2 I assume that most all old tractors have collected rust and muck in the bottom of the big drive gear area. Just how clean should they be when one says "that is enough" These are probably rather silly questions to some but this is my first time around even though I am older than dirt. Thanks in advance for any suggestions JoeM

JoeM, you don't have to completely disassemble the clutch pulley but should take it apart far enough to ascertain the condition of all the parts. Be sure to grease the bearing, pivot pins & ends of the toggles before re-installing. ~On the cleaning of the 1st reduction cover & other trans areas, that's basically up to you & what you can live with. It isn't so much the cleaning but removing enough covers & parts to verify everything inside is in good shape. Again it depends on the effort you want to put in & if you miss something to begin with are you willing to take it back apart later to do the repairs. On a personal note; over the years I have found I am much farther ahead to tear down to a bare case & start the restoration from scratch as I hate oil leaks or having to tear something back down after it is painted.
