Does anyone know if my '58 MF50 can handle a 3 bottom plow. I want to establish and maintain a 2 acre garden in moderatly heavy clay soil. I have calcium in the tires but would like to take it out. Will I be able to plow without it? Thanks for any help.

Hi John

If you already have a 3 bottom plow you can remove one and keep components as spares.

Your 50' will last longer it will plow easyly and will not be overloaded. Let's think that 3 bottoms was little too much when the tractor was new she is 33 years old now.

Have fun with your red one.

In heavy clay a good rule of thumb is: 15 drawbar horsepower for every bottom. In lighter soils you could get away with as little as 10-12 per bottom. I would leave the calcium in the tires. Another good rule of thumb in my experiences is that I could plow a half-acre an hour per bottom. Unless you plan to do more acres in the future you could buy a 2-bottom for a bit less and still only be out in the field 2 hours as in your case. It's up to you though, especially if you find a good price on a three bottom.
P.S. If I had just two acres I would want a smaller plow. Why? Using big equip. on small acres is no fun. Not as many hours out in the field to thouroughly enjoy it! It does get old after a while but not when it's the first time back on the seat of a tractor after quite a few years!

The MF 50 is really just a MF 35 with a longer and heavier front end and different sheet metal. We have a 35 with the Perkins diesel that we have years ago pulled 3-14 in light soils but in heavy soils are a little too much. If you have only 2 acres a 2-14 would probably be a better bet as you are looking at only 3 hours work anyway.

I would bet 3-14's would be marginal, and that you would want both fluid in the tires and wheel weights before you were done in clay. Lighter sandy soil might be a different story.

Our gas MH50 handled a 2-14 setup with no problem in what is sometimes referred to as soil up in northern Minn but another bottom might have been pushing it.
