Hello again Albert. Sounds like you've got a great deal there and a nice little project. That is the best tractor price I've ever heard of (other that one that was given to me but I don't have that one running yet). Get hold of me by email (mballash@wci.ab.ca) and let me know where you are from. I think my email also shows up on this posting. I've got some stuff here (literature, etc.) for the model 30 that I could copy and send off to you. It's pretty good.

Looks like you've got yourself a Massey Harris 30 there. They were made from '47 to '53. They succeeded the earlier 101/102 Juniors and eventually were replaced by the model 33's (which had an overhead valve 4-cylinder engine). The 162 in the engine number relates to the 162 cubic inch engine size. All the model 30's had the 162 cubic inch version. My son has a '56 333 (which was a slightly upgraded version of the 33) and his has a loader on it. Did you buy this tractor or are you just checking it out? I've got a few tractors with those engines and they are pretty good old things, easy to work on etc. Did you find a serial number, we could ID the year of manufacture for you if you find it.

It's got a 4-cylinder Continental Flathead engine in it. The same engine showed up as 124, 140, or 162 cubic inches depending on the tractor model and year. The only real difference in the various engines was the bore size of the cylinders. Now, it could be any of the following Massey models (hope I don't miss any). Could be a 101 Junior, 102 Junior, 30, 20, 22, 81, or 82. Does it have a cast iron front tub or a channel iron frame? Does it have hinged side covers or a one piece hood with sidecovers as part of the single unit? What does the grille look like, is it mesh, louvered tin or bar-style tin? Tell us a bit more and we'll be able to ID it for you. Meanwhile, the serial number is hand-stamped into the bolted down steel plate that covers the transmission. Scrape off some of the paint there and you'll find it. It is on the drivers left side of that removeable plate. Under the tranny will be the casting dates of the transmission housing (although that doesn't give you the model number, nor is the year necessarily exact). Let us know how you make out.

Sounds like a 30 or a 33. If it's a 30 it has the 162 but if it's a 33 it has an E-201. Both have the same grille as the newer 44's. The s/n for either can be found stamped into the casting (not the bolt-on plate) on the top of the tranny housing... usually on the left under an inch of grease.
