Removing valves from flathead continental

IS there a perfered method for removing valves
from a flathead continental? I have Y91 4 cylinder gasoline engine from a M-H Pacer.
The intake valves are pinned and exhaust valves
use keepers. For both I can get my C-clamp style
valve compressor under the pearch and remove the pin or keepers. For the valves that are stuck I
guess I can turn the adjusting nut/bolt and push the valve up and remove the valve. Once the valve is removed. I compress the spring pearch again and remove the adjusting nut/bolt from the lift. At this point I don't have room the remove
the lifter so I decompress the spring. Remove the spring pearch and yank the spring out. This is the part that seems weird. I kinda have to rip the spring out. Now I can pull the valve. Seems like alot of steps. Am I doing this correctly.?

I'm working on an exhaust valve that won't
travel any higher than what I can push it
\up with using the lifter adjustment. So what do
I do now. I don't want to put a pickle fork
under the valve. And yes, I have the keepers
removed... Maybe I need to build a wooden pickle fork as not to damage the valve. Any ideas?

Maybe you're just stuck by the old dirt and oil,get by the time. Just Try to spin the valve on itself by using a pin or a little punch throuht the spring, then try to spin it and push it until you can grab it by the hand. Then skirt some oil or wd-40 or something like that, to get more easier to loosen it up. Maybe this could help you... Good Luck !

oil and turn, oil and turn, - pop, it goes.

You should be able to remove the valve once the retainer is off. If you have burrs or sharp edges where the retainer was, carefully remove these by turning the valve by hand, while holding a screwdriver or eq. against the valve stem, gently scraping off the burrs. Then again oil and turn.

You don't say if your working from a manual,
but I'll quote my maint manual for the 162 cu Cont. It's not as detailed as the shop manual.

"The exhaust and intake springs are interchangeable. When reassembling the springs, make sure the upper end of the spring fits around
the lower end of the valve guide and in the counter bore block"

It goes on to say the guides have to be reamed
and lists a whole lot of specs for clearances.

guides 1-15/32 from top of block. seats in. 30 deg " ex. 45 " Width in valve seat 1/16 " ex " 5/64

stem clearance limits - .001 to .0025 and with new parts - .0015 to .002

spring pressure 47 - 53 lbs to compress to 1-5/8

Tappet clearance .014 Guess this isn't much help for your problem.

Haven't worked on mine yet, so your problem will probably be mine eventually.
