I need help adjusting my governor bumper spring. It is the slotted screw with the lock nut
at the back bottom of the governor. Do I turn clockwise gradually for more back
pressure of the governor arm, or is it the other
way?. Are there any other things I should consider to get the same result? The arm does move in and out, but it doesn't move the
butterfly valve back much. The carb to governor linkage is adjusted OK.

Thanks Blue.

I have a manual for an 81 (124 cu in). It has the same gov but probably has a different linkage. It is obtuse and confusing. The way I did it was to start the tractor & let it warm up. Set throttle about 1/8 of the way in from lowest setting. Loosen the nut on the adjuster screw on the back of the gov. Run the screw in and out until the gov just starts to kick in with the throttle at that setting (listen to the rpm's). Make sure that it doesn't stall with the throttle at nothing and make sure it doesn't race beyond 1800 at full. 1800 is the max rpm for that motor according to M-H so move it slowly. If you want a copy of that part of the manual E-Mail me an address and I'll send it out as soon as I can.

The service manual for a Massey 35 contains a description of governor adjustment. I remember thinking that the description was a bit unusual. I have little experience and even less understanding of what was being said. Maybe you should look in the service manual.
