I am interested in in 1998 Massey Ferguson 231. Could someone please give me some opinions on this particular tractor good or bad! Also, I have gotton conflicting stories on the actual engine horsepower on a 1998 Massey 231. I have heard the engine h.p. to be 38 to 40 h.p. from someone and 40 to 45 engine h.p. from others. The engine is a (Perkins AD3.152)(engine #CE22666P204498A) Does anyone know?

I just found this question , I know it has been a few years since you posted the question about the hp/ The 231 has 38 eng hp and puts out 34 hp thru the pto .My friend has one and hasn't had any complaints yet . it is now 6/27/04

The 231 is basically the same tractor as the MF 135. They upgraded parts over the years but the rear housing is the same along with a few other parts. It is a good chore tractor for someone who is only going to put on 100 to 200 hours a year. I have a 135 that works great still for small jobs, mostly pulling trees or brush chopping inside some of our smaller pens. I also have a friend who just bought a 231S last summer and uses his about 100 hours a year. For the amount they want for these tractors you can not go wrong compared to adding about $5000 more for a modern tractor.

John,
I am familiar with this tractor. It is a low end tractor. It is light wieght with the small rear end with dry brakes.I WOULD NOT ADVISE anyone to buy a Massey wit the last number ending in 1.Such as 231,251,271,ect.Ive seen a lot of problems with those. The 3 series(253,283,383ect)seem to be the best group of the bunch and the best selling.Oh yeah about those brakes, they have went back to the old style brake/clutch pedals.Iused to accidently slam the brake on or kick the latch off every time Igot off the tractor(we had a 178 and a 175 MF)I liked the 2 series(235,245,255,265ect)brake pedals better.I guess if you are mowing yard with the 231 it would be OK
My uncle bought a 253,its a pretty good little tractor.Compare and shop..... ..... .DEANO

I've owned a couple of these in the last few
years.Don't seem to sell real well, made in
poland, kind of clumsey to operate with the brake pedals back to far,no platform to stand
up on to get off tractor.Seen some new ones
for around 12000.00.
