Why would the oil in the transmission section my MF135 disel foam up when it runs? What do I replace it with?

Water from condensation or leaks around the shift levers or at the filler plug that has no gasket. Farmland Coop sells an oil "Super HTB" that I've found works better in my 135 and external system. Doesn't foam as much, meets MF specs for transmission oil which they want to be their 1129A.

The previous owner of my 135 stored it outside and between condensation and leaks around the shift levers had detected water in the oil. He doubled up the shift lever boots. I put a gasket on the oil filler plug. And now I use that Coop oil and I detect no foam problems even in winter.

To little oil in transmission, pump gets air and mix with oil, or a leakage on suction side of pump so air enters the pump.

Those are normally the problem. Of course, when the tractor is running the oil may be a little "filled of air" but no foamy.

Or, you have the wrong type of oil in there !!! Can cause foam.

There has been several questions lately about oil in tranny on MF 35.

I have been recommending engine oil, 15W-40

Actually there are several options.

Massey Ferguson recommended:
1. Gear oil, SAE 80 - 90 NO EP oil, NO HYPOID oil, just plain gear oil.

2. Engine oil, SAE 40, maybe SAE 50 in warmer climates.

The 3rd alternative has come up in recent years when the oil suppliers has offered a combinated engine, transmission, hydraulic, differential oil, so farmers could use one single oil type for every tractor. This oil works both for dry and wet disc brakes tractors.

This oil is not a perfect oil for engines, but can be used.

I have been recommending the engine oil alternative, because it is often the cheapest alternative, you need only one oil, and it works fine on older MF, MF 35, MF 65, and even on the TE /TO 20-30

If the tractor has wet disc brakes, you can not use engine oil, but those brakes came around 1970-1973, and only on MF 165 and bigger tractors. So in your case you can use the engine oil alternative.

If your MF 135 has Multi Power I suggest you ask your oil supplier what oil he can recommend.

Hope this helps.
