Torque convertor engine braking

I wonder if any one could clarify how much engine braking is provided on MF's torque convertor +shuttle transmissions? Does the torque convertor have an over-run clutch to stop the tractor running faster than the engine? I'm concerned here about driving downhill, where I'd hate to do without the engine braking provided by my current machine.

Also, what happens when the engine's stopped and the transmission hydraulics are not powered? Do both forward and reverse clutches release, or do both engage (locking the transmission)?

Any information gratefully received. I tried this with a MF50HX, but the gradiants were so slight that I really couldn't tell.

Thanks in advance, AES

you cannot get any support from torque convertor for braking at all

you might will have to opt for a retader

the clutch works just like your foot clutch it is engaged when it is in any position except neutral even if the tractor is not running, has negligible braking effect and inclines won't bother it.

The Instant Reverse transmission has very little engine braking because of the fact the pedal has to be pushed down for the engine to be engaged to the rear wheels.

Thanks for the response - looking at a description of the system I see what you mean.

That seems really dangerous on any kind of slope. I mean, you start off down the slope, ease off the accelerator to slow down - the clutch suddenly disengages letting you freewheel downhill out of control.

Are these machines only useable on the flat? Or is there some other trick?

The 50HX I drove had a different mechanism, a switch to flick between fwd-n-rev. You could leave it in fwd with your foot off the pedal. Maybe some sort of "lock-in-gear" gadget could be rigged up.

Thanks, AES
