Continental Engine Thermostat, Can't find one?

Does anyone know where I can go to buy a thermostat for a continental 162 engine?. It's stamped HRD 12 51, and on the valve
part it says T151 stamped 3 times. It's in the
open position cold so I know it's a gonner.

If I can't find one, I was thinking of buying a truck thermostat with the flange the same size or smaller, and the water flow opening the same size. I would solder the flange to a larger plate the size of the original thermostat. But that's a work around of course. I'd prefer to have an original.

Thanks for the help. Blue

You're welcome, and you're right about that engine being in a Case tractor. I've got a model V Case (the forerunner of the VA series) that has the 124 cubic inch version of that engine in it (also have a MH 101 Junior with it too). Just the bore was changed in the 3 sizes, 124, 140, and 162 cubic inches. If you're ever looking for parts, check out any old junk Lincoln welders, they were used on those even into the 70's and maybe even the 80's I think.

I took the little curved casting (that holds the thermostat) to an auto parts place (maybe NAPA I think) and we just found one by trial and error that dropped in nice and snug. Then of course, you make sure that it's the temperature you want, and that you install it facing the right way. Then, you've got to fabricate a little spacer collar to hold the thermostat "up" in the casting. I made mine out of sheet aluminum about 1/16" thick. After the thermostat is in place, measure the width of the collar you need to fabricate. Don't forget that the collar cannot be totally round or you will block off the bypass outlet in the casting. You've got to leave a little gap for that outlet.

Thanks Mike,

I drove into Ottawa to take care of business and decided to check into a CASE parts
place. After much head scratching and the guy ready to give up, I suggested he pull a few out
of the boxes and micrometer the flange and flow opening. He found one that fit the specs.

I already had a sleeve to lock the thermo in.

It shows a tiny bit higher than 180, but
that could be due to the gas vapor Wal
Mart temperature gauge I bought. The electrics are a bit more accurate.

I think I read somewhere that the continental
was installed in one of the earlier case tractors.

Thanks again. Blue
