My good neighbor (an excellent mechanic and owner of a MF 65) suggested that I replace my non-working generator with a "one wire alternator". I am looking for opinions. He said we could retro-fit it on my FE35. Thanks, C. T.

If you do go with the one wire alternator you will probably have to change the pulley size. (As a rule the one wire alternator dosen't start charging until the engine reaches 2500 rpm). By replacing the pulley you can trick the alternater into thinking it is running faster, this will also produce more of a charge at slower rpm's..

By all means, YES. I would use a 3 wire alternator and save some $$$. They're only about $40 and work better at low RPM than the one wire alternators do. You end up with a better configuration and maintain the simplicity.

Hi C T -

Excellent move. We use Delco 37 amp, modified for low rpm cut-in. About $50 US. New bracket, possibly reversing battery and ammeter to accommodate negative ground, rewiring to eliminate old gen/reg wiring.
