I'm kind of new to this whole tractor thing. I have a '53 MH Pony that I use to mow about 1.5 acres of fields. When this thing starts to really do some work white smokes jets out of the vent tube in the valve lifter access plate. Is this normal or do I have serious problem? Thanks in advance.

It's not good! Mine was just like that and the motor was in serious need of a rebuild. Compression is leaking by the rings and blowing air and oil out the breather. It's took .030 pistons and boring the block to fix mine. Your looking at $450 to $650 parts and machine work if you do the work yourself. It depends on how bad your luck is. Mine was bad.

My luck is even worse, I have the same issue, and I am burning/blowing out 4 quarts of oil every 2 months. I took the engine apart, and the person/persons that owned it before didn"t take care of it, looks like the dipstick broke off and fell in getting broken/ground to pieces. This is topped off by scoring on the crankshaft, bad valves train, bent connecting rods, but one of these this little baby will pur again.

Smoke blowing out like that is a sign your engine is worn out, and needs overhauled.
