I just bought my MF 65 a few months ago. I hooked up a new Woods 6' rotary mower and noticed that the PTO grinds when I engage in the engine PTO position. I thought I had too much clutch pedal free play, so I took up some of the clearance by adjusting the clutch shaft connected to the clutch pedal...no improvement. Is there something I am over looking? Is there a separate PTO clutch adjustment? Many Thanks...Chris

Gentlemen -

There is a second adjustment which generally cures the dragging PTO clutch.

Accessible through the hole in the bottom of the bell housing. Three cap screws with lock nuts, heads pointed toward the rear, around the perimeter of the clutch casting. Adjusting these to about .060 clearance works. (Book says .080 - .090, but this still drags.)

Yoy need a really good wrench for the job. They are usually set hard, and if you strip one you'll have to split the tractor to finish the adjustment!

If small disk(one for PTO) is bad this will not help.

I have had a MF65 for 25 yrs and have experience the same problem. Try making adjustment rod longer. If lever has 2 holes put pin in hole that will give most estension when pedal in pushed down. Last summer I was baling some hay and my clutch for PTO went out! Could push clutch in and would get grinding. I split tractor and clutch disk for PTO was bad. This tractor has 2 clutches built into one package. If you do this yourself you can get clutch part rebuilt for about $300. Be sure to put in piolt and T bearning. When you reassembly put all parts on spline shaft and push tractor together. Then through inspection hole on bottom put bolts into the pressure plate. Use screw driver to rotate engine slowly to next bolt hole on pressure plate. Don not force engine to mate up using bolts. You can damage clutch plates.

Chris, once you get the clutch adjusted the way you want and if it still grinds when you engage it, there is a simple little trick to save the teeth on your gears, First climb aboard and start the engine, place the pto gear shift into the ground speed range and the tractor in a low gear such as first, let out the clutch and get the tractor started in a forward motion, after you have the clutch is out and the tractor has forward motion and the mower will start to spin, quickly push the clutch back in and shift the pto lever into the engine speed range. Do this with the throttle at slightly above idle. We have had modern MF's for 25 years and they all have seemed to grind if you try to go directly into the engine pto range after they get a few thousand hours on them. Johnny

I don't know how to add a link, but you can go to Big Dean's web site and he describes the internal clutch adjustments, as well as many other helpful Massey tips. The web site is as follows: Link
