Have a good trip Dean. I appreciate the help I've gotten from you, and from your MF page. The 165D I've been working on is in lots better shape now. Still gotta tighten up the adjustment on the steering. It still hunts a little to much when running at road speed. Thanks again and God bless.

Stan,
I have a 175D that "hunts", wobbles a bit, at road speed. I've tried to tighten things up a bit without success. The service manual doesn't go into enough detail to be really helpful. I think that all of the linkages to the cylinder have to be real tight. Dean warned me that any wear in the connecting pins can cause problems. I think I'll have to replace linkage pins with slightly oversized pins to compensate for wear. Let me know how you make out.

Hey Barry,
Does the 175 have the same steering set-up as the 165? I'm kinda new to MF's. I replaced the bushings on the vertical steering shaft thru the front casting, one tie-rod, (other shows very little play). I think now the "hunting at high speed" is cause I left just a little to much play in the adjustment that lets the steering-wheel motion activate the hyd. valve on the steer cyl. That's a really sensitive adjustment it seems. The way the tractor drives reminds me of "herding hogs". I'll try to correct it later. I drove the tractor over to my daughter's house so son-in-law can use it to rake hay. This is the first real use since I've had the 165, other than bout 20 minutes of bush-hogging. Wish I had some excuse to load the tractor for a while to see how it really performs. Can't hook it to son-in-laws round baler or disc mower yet, cause it doesn't have any remote hyd. Gotta add that later.
Good luck, sorry I'm not much help on the 175.

Stan,

The 165 and 175 use the same steering setup, but there are at least two versions for each as shown in the service manual. You are right about the sensitivity of the adjustment on the steering cylinder. I think that's the key to correcting the "herding" instinct. I don't use my 175 on the road much, so I've put off adjustments and repairs. I plan to replace the somewhat worn pins at both ends of the cylinder linkage. I hope that does it.

I got my 175 last August. It's a 1972 model in good shape. It's nice to have a little power to spare. I use it for general farm work on my hobby farm - hauling firewood, plowing snow, a little plowing (snakes a 3 bottoms across the field real nice), mowing and baling hay. My 175 came with a remote hydraulic setup, but I haven't used it yet.
Real nice to have a tractor that works well.

Good luck with your 165. Have fun, and work safely.

Barry
