Does anybody know what can be done to make a 44 run in the open class tractor pulls? I see Olivers, Farmalls, and Molines all running in these classes but no 44's. Why? If the Farmalls are made to make alot of power why shouldn't Masseys? Thanks, Bob.

I run a 44 Massey from the LaCrosse area, although I have been all over WI and some parts of Minnesota. i have mine bored and stroked, but no head work as of yet. That is where the power comes from with the masseys. The Stock heads are terrible. Hopefully, later this month I will do some. If you have any questions, email me.

Save your money on the engine and add a pickup transmission between the bell housing and the rear end. Shift her down a bit and you'll have more power than you need. Then it's just a little skill on the brakes and you'll be winning. Cost me $15 for a transmission and you should see the trophy case.

Val -

That would not be legal in the classes I want to pull in! Any other suggestions? Bob

Hey Bob,

No answers her but have a 44 I want to make the JD & IH boys pay with. Someone must have parts, ideas how to make the Continental run. My stock 44 will almost keep up to my M with the M&W big bore kit, but not quite.

BTW Where in WI are you? I'm between Osceola & Star Prairie NE of StPaul MN.

Later,

Steve NW WI

As far as a place to start with modifications, the first thing to do is mill the head to increase compression. I have 100 thousands milled off of mine with M&W pistons. However, I have heard that 150 thousands is doable without having any problems. Clean up the intake ports and the intake manifold and match the intake to the carb. After that, it is pretty much bore and stroke time. Pay attention to little details like hitch design. I run 15.5s on mine in Div II stuff, but I believe that 14.9s would be better because 1st gear is a little slow with the 15.5s.

One of the biggest problems with a Massey 44 as you get up into the upper divisions is that the cylinders are not evenly spaced in the block making huge cubic inch kind of difficult. You can get them in the 500 CID range without too much trouble. The bottom ends are heavy enough to take the abuse. I think one of the biggest reasons that you don't see more of them is that nobody is really building parts for them. You look in the Hook magazine and there are all kinds of goodies for Olivers, JD and IHs, but no Masseys. This equals higher dollar per hp ratio. :-)
